Navaneelan Cosmetic & Family Dentistry, along with our great race sponsors, we are pleased to welcome each of you to the 14th annual Cornwall Triathlon. Proceeds of the event will be directed to the Boys & Girls Club of Cornwall and S. D. & G.
We have assembled the following detailed race information package to help make the race a success for you. Please read this carefully and familiarize yourself with the course maps. Olympic Distance starts with a deep water start at 8:30am. Kayaks will be in the water at 8:00am for warm-up swims. Men should be wearing blue swim caps and women pink swim caps.
Sprint Duathlon starts at 8:30am on Montreal Road in front of the driveway entrance to the school. The first run is 2.5km out and back along the bike course heading west along Montreal Road.
5km Run starts at 8:30am on Montreal Road across from the finish line arch. Runners will head east along Montreal Road and then funnel onto the recreational path around the 1km mark. Runners reach the turnaround and return on the recreational path to the finish line.
Sprint Triathlon starts at 9:45am. The men will start with a deep water start at 9:45am. The women will start 5 minutes later at 9:50am. Men should be wearing blue swim caps and women pink swim caps.
Sprint Triathlon Relay start at 9:50am. Relay swimmers should be wearing white swim caps. The exchange from one sport to another will occur at the rack location for the team bicycle. The timing chip needs to be exchanged for each leg and the cyclist and runner must wear the bib number for their segment. Please be constantly aware of the other teams and athletes around you while in transition.
Try-A-Tri starts with a deep water start at 10:30am. If you are nervous for the swim you can opt to stand along the shore line and join the swimmers after the start of the swim.
***Any swimmer missing the start of their event may be stopped from starting the race if swim aid/support cannot be guaranteed for that participant. If the swimmer misses the start and is not allowed to join the group they are to give their timing chip to the swim director.
***Lost your swim cap, there are spares available at the water entrance from the head swim starter.
Race Director Rob Allen will be at the adult site transition area on Saturday evening (August 26th) at 6:30pm for all participants interested in a course overview and transition layout/basics/tips. This is a great way to get your questions answered one on one before the big day.
Swim distance is 200m for the Try-A-Tri (1 short loop), 750m for the Sprint Triathlon and Relay (1 loop) and 1500m for the Olympic Distance (2 loops). The swim is in the St. Lawrence River in an area protected from the current. The water visibility is very good.
The water temperature is traditionally between 70 and 74 degrees. Wetsuits will be allowed unless an announcement is made race morning indicating a non-wetsuit event.
Our swim safety crew consists of 3-5 kayaks, 1-3 canoes, 6 lifeguards both on shore and in canoes, RCMP boat and Cornwall Fire Department boat.
If a swimmer is having difficulty in the swim, please raise your arm and then make your way to a kayak. If you do not feel you can make your way to a kayak, raise your arm; hold your position and the kayak/canoe team will move to you.
There will be volunteers at the water exit to help you exit the swim. Upon exiting the water there is a short sharp climb that can get slippery, please use caution.
If you are interested in your true swim time, check the clock as you exit the swim. Your Sportstats posted swim time will include T1.
When exiting your swim you will have approximately a 200m run to the transition zone over the soccer field. Markers will be placed along the course to guide you.
On your run to transition you will encounter our team of wetsuit strippers. If you want your suit stripped call out in advance otherwise run straight past them. A water station will be set up near the gate closer to transition. This station may not be manned so grab your own water on the way by.
The bike loop is 10km in length. There are no difficult hills but the course is rolling and technical in nature. Be sure to be aware of your speed when manoeuvring the corners. There is a 180 degree turn at the east end of the course while the west end features a lollipop around the neighbourhood. A sign will be placed on the road indicating the approaching turnaround. The Turnaround cannot be missed – you cannot go any further.
Try-A-Tri is one loop, Sprint Tri/Du/Relay is 2 loops and the Olympic Tri is 4 loops.
Watch out for the speed bump on the exit and entrance driveway at the school while exiting/entering transition.
Make sure your helmet is on and buckled before removing your bike from the rack as well as only removing your helmet once your bike has returned to the rack.
In the event of rain, be sure to check your speed at the turnaround, tight corners and when crossing the painted traffic lines in the roadway.
Bike on the right side of the road near the curbing and pass on the left. Never cross the yellow centre line. There is no drafting, the draft zone is 10 meters or approximately 30 feet.
There will be a section of road about 150m long that has reduced width as we need to funnel vehicles in their own lane to restricted access areas. This section will still have room to pass but take extra caution.
Check out your speed as you pass the transition area going west on the police radar speed trap.
Participants may warm-up on the course prior to 8:20am. The course will have a rolling closure of traffic starting at 8:00am so please be aware that the roads will still have traffic during your warm-up. Once the events begin at 8:30am no rider will be allowed on the course for a warm-up. Sprint Tri members are not allowed to warm-up on the bike course past 8:20am. Go for a run instead.
Follow the recreational path to your events turnaround. There are turnaround signs at each turnaround. Run around the sign. Try-A-Tri is in Red. Sprint Tri/Du/5k/Relay are in Blue. Olympic Tri is in Green.
The Olympic Triathlon will do 1 loop running 5km out into the Grey’s Creek Conservation Area. Within Grey’s Creek you will be on the main road before getting back onto the recreational path for the turnaround.
Retrace your steps to the main road and back to transition.
The Sprint Tri/Du/Relay and 5km will do 1 loop running 2.5km out to just past the gazebo along the waterfront. The turnaround is almost parallel to the bike turnaround.
The Try-A-Tri will do 1 loop running 1.25km turning on the bike path across from East Front Public School.
Make sure your timing chip is on your ankle for all portions of your event.
- **Look at the map to know where you are going. There will be two large maps posted along the fence in transition.
- #1 At the exit of the swim, near transition. Water.
- There are no aid stations on the bike course, please take your own nutrition.
- #2 Anthony Street. Water, Gatorade and Gummy Bears
- #3 Water Treatment Plant. Water, Gatorade, Hammer Gels
- #4 Grey’s Creek Conservation Area. Water, Gatorade
- #5 Grey’s Creek Conservation Area near Run Turnaround. Water, Hammer Gels.
- Athlete’s will hit stations #2-5 twice depending on the distance you are competing in.
Your bike is to be placed in the spot relating to your bib number. Find your event and then find your rack location. Rack your bike with the landing wheel on the side where your number is located. Bikes are to be racked on alternate sides to provide more room. There are only 6 bikes per 10 feet of rack – plenty of room for you and your neighbours.
When entering the transition area in the morning it is required to enter via the rear of the high school. This route is accessible from the pedestrian bridge and parking at St. Lawrence College. Rack your bike then pick up your kit (if required). If you are registering on the day of the event, place your bike along the fence and register inside. Return to your bike with your number and enter transition.
Bicycle World will be on site for all your bike repair needs.
The race director reserves the right to impose time penalties or outright disqualification from the event if any of the rules of triathlon are broken. Disqualification will immediately be levied for the abuse of an official or volunteer at the event. The Cornwall Triathlon follows Triathlon Canada Rules & Guidelines.
Use of any type of in-ear music device is strictly prohibited. Use of one of these devices on any portion will result in automatic disqualification.
In the event of Thunderstorms or Very High Winds that make the swim course unsafe all events will be delayed a maximum of 30 minutes before our Weather Delay plan causes us to make the following changes.
1) The swim for all tri events will be cancelled. The reason for this is that we have to re-deploy the swim volunteers onto a suitable first run for each tri event.
2) The Duathlon and 5km Run will be delayed to start the same time as the Olympic Tri.
3) The Olympic Tri starters will run the 5km run course with the 5km Run athletes. The Sprint Duathlon will start as normal in the opposite direction.
4) The Sprint Triathlon and Relay will start at a delayed time from their normal start time. In lieu of the swim, participants will be asked to start their first run at the driveway entrance to St. Lawrence College. Runners will complete a 2km route that will take them through the swim entrance behind the school into transition.
5) The Try-A-Tri Triathlon will start at a delayed time from their normal start time. In lieu of the swim, participants will be asked to start their first run at the driveway entrance to St. Lawrence College. Runners will complete a 1km route that will take them through the swim entrance behind the school into transition.
6) The Bike Course and 2nd Run Course do not change.
In the circumstance where the event cannot be started because of weather or other catastrophe the Cornwall Triathlon sincerely apologizes for any inconvenience to all participants. Unfortunately with the nature of holding an event and all of the pre-event costs we cannot provide a refund in the event of cancellation. Efforts will be made to provide all participants with their souvenir items.
Farm Boy, James & Jenn’s No Frills, Wendy’s, Canadian Dairy Council and Pizza Pizza are providing the great lunch to athlete’s including salads, fruit, nachos, juice and simmering hot fresh pizza.
The medical command centre is located in the finish area. The medical command centre is supplied with a Paramedic. A separate tent will provide Massage Therapy and an Active Release Provider.
It may be a hot day on the course, please hydrate responsibly.
We have over 200 volunteers over the 2 days of triathlon in Cornwall. Please thank them during your race, without them this event would not be able to continue. If you are travelling with someone who can help out during the event, please direct them to http://www.cornwalltriathlon.com/vol.shtml.
The ideal spot to park is at St. Lawrence College in the East lot. You can then take the pedestrian bridge to transition. Since Montreal Road will have a rolling closure starting at 8:00am, the best way to reach St. Lawrence College is via Belmont Street.
There are washrooms as you enter the school on your right hand side. There will also be two porta-potties just outside transition at the swim in. Additional porta-potties include one on the run course at Anthony Street about 1km into the run and another on the Bike Course in the parking lot to the right about 100m past McConnell (Tim Horton’s).
